Letter from Amy Augustyniak, former Nanny of the Year:

"I have been in the childcare industry for over ten years, and a professional nanny for four. Over the course of my career, I have found nanny positions through various means: newspapers, online search engines, word of mouth references, and nanny agencies. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the most positive experiences I’ve had were those from the agencies. When you go through the paper, internet, or by word-of-mouth, you have no idea what kind of home you are stepping into.
There’s comfort to be had in knowing that the family has been screened by a neutral party. The agencies provide the families with valuable information about being household employers, taxes, and how to treat their nannies which most people wouldn’t have a clue about otherwise.
Caring for other peoples’ children is such an intimate job. We as nannies really put ourselves out there for our work families. I think that makes us vulnerable in ways that most other kinds of careers don’t. The agencies provide us with a solid foundation to which we can turn with questions, concerns, and needs for support. They are staffed by experienced childcare professionals who know how to lend a hand, an ear, or a shoulder when called for. In a role in which we have no manager to intercede between us and our work families, the agencies are there to guide us, protect us, and help us.
Having been a nanny in the Northeast for many years, coming to Austin was a huge change in both lifestyle and career atmosphere. The nanny industry in Central Texas is absolutely ideal. There are plenty of great jobs, salaries are competitive, and the cost of living is low (compared to the other parts of the country where nannies are common). On top of all that, it’s a wonderful place to raise children-people are friendly, the weather is warm and there a million and ten great things to do around town with kids!
I have worked with more than one of the nanny agencies here in Austin in the two years I have lived here, and they have all been wonderful resources for me. Being new to the area, they provided me with the means to quickly jump in and find work with quality families. Nannies from the Heart shines as the most personalized of these agencies. I feel that their staff took the time to get to know me as a person, and understand my goals as a professional caregiver. I also think that their clientele tend to be more down-to-earth, friendly people, rather than the high-profile, competitive types who chose to go through other agencies.
It is my opinion that when it comes to children, status means little to them. They don’t care which agency their nanny came from! What matters most is that they have a caregiver who is caring, fun, and one who fits with their family’s style and values. That relationship is most likely to arise if an agency takes the time to get to know the family and nanny well: they can make better matches that way.
Being a nanny can be a challenging and rewarding experience. It can also be disastrous, frustrating, and painful. Using local nanny agencies is the smartest move a nanny can make to ensure that he or she is placed in a safe and happy work environment. In Austin, the resources provided by the agencies really make a difference in our lives. I have really loved my experience with Nannies from the Heart and I recommend them wholeheartedly to anyone seeking employment or great childcare."
